Rainy Day Enrichment Ideas for Dogs (Indoor-Only Activities)

A rainy day doesn't have to mean a wired, bored dog. With 10-15 minutes of focused enrichment a few times a day, your dog can be more settled than they'd be after a regular walk.

Lick mat with frozen treats

Spread peanut butter (xylitol-free), wet food, plain yogurt or mashed banana on a lick mat. Freeze for 30 minutes. The licking action is deeply calming and the frozen layer extends the session. 15-20 minutes of zen.

Snuffle mat with the full meal

Hide the entire breakfast or dinner in a snuffle mat. The 10-15 minutes of nose work replaces walk-related mental stimulation perfectly. End of meal = sleepy dog.

Hide and seek with you or treats

Hide treats around one room (start easy). Or hide yourself and call your dog. Both tap into search instincts. Rotate which room you use to keep it fresh.

Mini training sessions

Three or four 5-minute sessions throughout the day. Teach a new trick (spin, paw, roll over) or polish existing commands. Training is mentally exhausting and bonding.

Indoor obstacle course

Use chairs, cushions and blankets to create a course. Walk your dog through it on leash, then let them figure it out for treats. Add 'find it' games at each station.

Calm decompression at the end

Wind down with a frozen lick mat or chew on their bed with a cozy blanket. Going from active play to calm rest helps prevent the over-aroused 'second wind' that high-energy dogs get.
