How to Tire Out a High-Energy Dog Indoors

High-energy dog focused on a lick mat indoors during a rainy day

When walks aren't an option, high-energy dogs can drive a household crazy. The secret most pet parents miss: mental work tires dogs out faster than physical exercise. A 15-minute brain workout can do what an hour of fetch can't.

Mental exercise > physical exercise

Dogs need both, but mental work is dramatically more tiring per minute. A dog that runs for an hour comes home wired; a dog that solves puzzles for 15 minutes comes home calm. For indoor days, lean heavily on mental work.

Food puzzles for the whole meal

Skip the bowl entirely on indoor days. Use a snuffle mat, slow feeder, lick mat or food-dispensing toy for breakfast and dinner. Every meal becomes 15-20 minutes of focused work. Two meals = 30-40 minutes of brain drain.

Indoor training sessions

Five-minute training sessions, 3-4 times a day. Practice basics (sit, down, stay), teach a new trick, or work on impulse control. Training is mentally exhausting and strengthens your bond. Most dogs love it.

Sniff games and hide-and-seek

Hide treats around the house (start easy: visible spots; progress to hidden). Hide yourself and call your dog to find you. These tap into natural search behaviors and tire dogs out fast.

Structured indoor physical play

Tug, controlled fetch in a hallway, stairs work (if joints allow), or 'chase the laser' for very young, very fit dogs. Always include rest breaks. Bonus: end with a lick mat to bring energy back down before bed.
