How to Prepare Your Dog for a Road Trip

A great road trip with your dog starts long before the engine turns on. Cars are loud, unfamiliar and full of motion, and even experienced travel dogs benefit from a little preparation. With the right gear and a few simple habits, your dog rides more comfortably and your car stays much cleaner.

Practice the car a few days before

If your dog is new to driving, do two or three short practice rides — even just around the block. Reward calm behavior with treats. By the time the real trip begins, the car feels familiar instead of overwhelming.

Set up the back seat

Install a waterproof car seat cover the night before. Add a familiar blanket and a chew toy. Confirm your dog can sit, lie down and turn around comfortably in the space. A defined spot helps anxious dogs settle faster.

Pack the essentials in one bag

Use a single organizer bag for: leash, ID, waste bags, foldable bowl, water bottle, food in a sealed container, a small towel and any medications. One bag means nothing gets left behind and a pet sitter could take over without instructions.

Plan hydration and meal timing

Offer water at every rest stop using a portable water bottle. Skip the meal in the hour before driving to reduce the risk of motion sickness. For longer trips, a small snack mid-drive is fine — large meals are best saved for rest stops.

Build in regular breaks

Aim for a stretch and potty break every 2 to 3 hours. Clip the leash before opening the door, walk for 5 to 10 minutes and offer water. These short pauses keep your dog more relaxed and reduce restlessness in the back seat.

Have a cleanup plan

Keep a microfiber towel, a few waste bags and unscented pet-safe wipes in the trunk. Wipe paws before re-entering the car after rest stops so dirt and mud don't transfer to the cover or the floor.
