How to Keep Dogs Cool on Summer Walks (And Spot Heatstroke Early)

Dog drinking from a portable water bottle on a shaded summer walk

Summer walks can quickly become dangerous for dogs — much faster than most pet parents realize. Heatstroke can develop in 15-20 minutes on a hot day. Knowing when to walk, how to hydrate and what warning signs to watch for keeps summers fun instead of scary.

The 7-second pavement test

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paws. On 85°F days, asphalt can hit 135°F — enough to burn paw pads within minutes. Stick to grass, walk early morning or after sunset, and avoid midday entirely.

Walk timing matters more than walk length

Before 8 a.m. or after 8 p.m. in summer. Even on overcast days, the surface temperature can be dangerous. Shorter walks more often beat one long hot walk. Some breeds (flat-faced dogs especially) should skip walks entirely when it's above 80°F.

Hydration on the go

A portable pet water bottle should be on every summer walk. Offer water every 10-15 minutes, even on short walks. Don't wait for your dog to look thirsty — by then they're already dehydrated. Cool (not cold) water is safer; ice water can cause stomach upset.

Spot heatstroke early

Heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, stumbling, vomiting or collapse are all emergencies. If you see any of these: move to shade immediately, wet their belly and paws with cool (not cold) water, offer small sips, and call your vet. Heatstroke can be fatal within an hour without treatment.

Cool down at home

After summer walks, a cooling pet mat gives dogs a place to lower their body temperature safely. Avoid wrapping them in cold wet towels (it can trap heat); cool the belly and paws instead. Keep fresh water in multiple rooms.

Final thoughts

Walk early or late, test the pavement, offer water often, and know the warning signs. Summer with a dog is great — as long as you respect the heat.
